Family IT support becomes essential for older generations across the UAE, Kaspersky survey highlights

September 15, 2026

Kaspersky recent survey undertaken in the Middle East, Turkiye and Africa (META) region reveals that younger family members and friends are playing a critical role in helping elderly people navigate the digital world, from installing apps to managing online banking and privacy settings. The findings highlight both the growing dependence on informal tech support and the need for more accessible and secure digital tools for older generations.

According to the survey results, 89% of respondents from the UAE have experience assisting elderly relatives or friends with information technology on their devices. Half of respondents (50%) said they provide support regularly, while another 39% help occasionally upon request.

Installing applications emerged as the most common type of assistance, with 48% of respondents reporting that they help older people download and set up apps. Support with social media accounts follows closely behind at 45%, reflecting the increasing importance of digital communication tools for seniors.

The survey also shows that many older users require help with more sensitive digital activities. Around 39% of respondents assist elderly relatives with online transactions and banking software, while 42% help configure privacy settings and 35% support the use of e-government services.

Despite growing cybersecurity concerns targeting older internet users, only 31% of respondents said they help elderly relatives install security software. This may indicate that cybersecurity protection is either underestimated, perceived as too complex, or not considered a priority during device setup.

When asked what could improve cybersecurity and digital confidence for older generations, respondents pointed to a combination of education, usability and family involvement. Around 29% of respondents believe that simpler and more intuitive digital tools and software would make the biggest difference. Another 27% said that more education about cyber risks and protective measures is needed, while 24% emphasized the importance of more active family support in setting up devices and installing applications.

The findings demonstrate that families increasingly act as an informal “digital helpdesk” for older generations, helping them participate in modern digital life while also reducing the risks associated with online services. At the same time, the results underline the need for technology providers, financial institutions and public services to make digital platforms more accessible, intuitive and secure for elderly users.

“Older generations are becoming more active online, but many still rely heavily on younger relatives and friends to navigate digital services safely,” said Seifallah Jedidi, Head of Consumer Channel in the Middle East, Turkiye and Africa at Kaspersky. “Improving digital literacy, simplifying interfaces and encouraging cybersecurity awareness can help make technology more inclusive and safer for everyone.”

Kaspersky shared recommendations for users to ensure they stay safe online and are able to help their elder relatives and friends if needed:

·       Stay informed about cyber risks: keep up with common scams and threats targeting older users.

·       Explain basic security rules: when assisting elderly relatives, explain how to recognize suspicious links, messages and calls, and why passwords and security codes should never be shared.

·       Install security software: safeguard their devices with a reliable security solution like Kaspersky Premium that if capable to protect against scams, phishing and malware.

·       Secure important accounts: help elderly relatives create strong, unique passwords and enable two-factor authentication.

·       Encourage them to ask for help: agree that they should consult a trusted person before responding to suspicious requests.

*The survey was conducted at the request of Kaspersky in 2026. The study sample included 5000 interviews in 5 countries: the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkiye, South Africa.
