{"id":4039,"date":"2014-09-19T10:00:54","date_gmt":"2014-09-19T14:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/me-en.kaspersky.com\/blog\/?p=4039"},"modified":"2017-09-24T18:37:56","modified_gmt":"2017-09-24T14:37:56","slug":"americans-privacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/me-en.kaspersky.com\/blog\/americans-privacy\/4039\/","title":{"rendered":"Poll: Americans are Passionate About Digital Security"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A poll released this summer shows that Americans are deeply concerned about their online privacy, and are increasingly demanding ownership of their digital properties.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/media.kasperskydaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2014\/09\/05111643\/Surevey-results-People-DO-care-about-their-privacy-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6070\" src=\"https:\/\/media.kasperskydaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2014\/09\/05111643\/Surevey-results-People-DO-care-about-their-privacy-1.png\" alt=\"Surevey-results-People-DO-care-about-their-privacy\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20140729006077\/en\/71-Americans-Care-Deeply-Online-Privacy-Privacy#.VBd2caPCe0E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">July poll<\/a> by WP Engine, a security software company, 71 percent of Americans \u2018care deeply\u2019 about their online privacy.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-pullquote\"><p>Surprise: Americans care A LOT about their digital privacy #dataprivacy<\/p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/share?url=https%3A%2F%2Fkas.pr%2F1Xb1&amp;text=Surprise%3A+Americans+care+A+LOT+about+their+digital+privacy+%23dataprivacy\" class=\"btn btn-twhite\" data-lang=\"en\" data-count=\"0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Tweet<\/a><\/blockquote>\n<p>The heightened concern over digital security is almost certainly tied to last year\u2019s exposure of the NSA\u2019s domestic surveillance practices, and this latest study jibes with what an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2014\/01\/poll-americans-privacy-security-102663.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Associated Press-GfK poll<\/a> reported earlier this year, in which more than 60 percent of respondents said that they care more about their personal privacy than they do about safeguarding against terror attacks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith so much personal detail accessible by each other online, it\u2019s more important than ever to be talking about what information is truly respected as private,\u201d said WP Engine CEO Heather Brunner of her group\u2019s poll, according to Business Wire. \u201c99 percent of Americans say they care about online privacy, so it\u2019s understandably concerning when you consider the sensitivity around some of their data being shared\u2014from bank records to relationship status\u2014in some cases across public platforms.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"pullquote\">\u201cWith so much personal detail accessible by each other online, it\u2019s more important than ever to be talking about what information is truly respected as private.\u201d \u2013 Heather Brunner, WP Engine<\/div>\n<p>The chief concerns among WP\u2019s respondents were social media, email and search engines, where 66 percent, 56 percent and 52 percent, respectively, of those polled expressed concern about their privacy through those mediums. Financial security is a top concern as well: 71 percent of Americans say that they worry most about their online privacy when they are accessing their online bank accounts or other financial data; online shopping was the next big financial fear for online users, with 57 percent of respondents expressing concerns over those interactions.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, 93 percent of respondents said that they believe that they should have full rights to at least some of their digital information.
