Our <a href=\"https:\/\/media.kasperskydaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/86\/2024\/07\/15164921\/The-Naked-Truth-Kaspersky.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent global study<\/a> \u2013 one of the largest polls ever conducted on this matter \u2013 reveals some alarming trends, and highlights the urgent need for both awareness and education on intimate image abuse, commonly known as \u201crevenge porn\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2>The digital age of intimacy<\/h2>\n<p>Nearly a quarter of the people surveyed in our poll have explicit images saved on their devices \u2013 with the highest rates among younger age groups. Specifically, 34% of 16\u201324-year-olds and 25\u201334-year-olds admitted storing such images. Additionally, 25% of respondents have shared intimate images with people they\u2019re dating or chatting with online \u2013 with this figure rising to 39% among 25\u201334-year-olds.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the widespread sharing of intimate images, only 21% of those who\u2019ve shared an image requested its deletion from the recipient\u2019s device. This statistic highlights a troubling lack of awareness about the long-term consequences of sharing intimate images.<\/p>\n<h2>The dark side of image sharing<\/h2>\n<p>The study also exposes a darker side of intimate image sharing. Shockingly, 8% of those who\u2019ve shared nude or explicit material admitted to doing so for revenge, and 9% \u2013 to frighten others. Nearly half of all respondents reported that they\u2019ve either experienced intimate image abuse themselves, or know someone who has. This issue is particularly pronounced among younger generations, with 69% of 16\u201324-year-olds and 64% of 25\u201334-year-olds reporting such experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Aaliyah\u2019s story is a stark reminder of this reality; her ex-partner maliciously shared her intimate images online, causing severe emotional and psychological impacts.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eH3CMF4_z0I?version=3&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Victim blaming: a harmful misconception<\/h2>\n<p>One of the most disturbing findings of our study is the prevalence of victim blaming. Precisely half of the respondents believe that if you share an intimate image of yourself, it remains your fault if it ends up in the wrong hands. This harmful misconception contributes to the stigma and isolation victims feel, making it harder for them to seek help and support.<\/p>\n<p>We need to emphasize this: if someone shares your intimate images without your consent, it\u2019s not your fault. The blame lies solely with those who misuse and exploit these images and, by definition \u2013 your trust. Alice\u2019s story illustrates this perfectly. After her partner\u2019s death, she found intimate images of herself online \u2014 images that were secretly taken while she was sleeping, highlighting that the real culprit is the one who takes and shares these images without explicit permission.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jQpfVb0mlJo?version=3&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>No one should have to suffer the emotional and psychological harm caused by intimate image abuse, and it\u2019s crucial that we all work to change the narrative around this issue.<\/p>\n<h2>Protect yourself online<\/h2>\n<p>To protect yourself from intimate image abuse, consider the following tips:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaspersky.com\/blog\/navigating-online-dating-risks\/50555\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>Think before you post<\/strong><\/a>: be mindful of who you share your data with, and consider the potential risks;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaspersky.com\/blog\/what-makes-a-messenger-secure\/48671\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>Use secure messengers<\/strong><\/a>: opt for messaging services with end-to-end encryption;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaspersky.com\/blog\/doxing-of-women\/46812\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>Report abuse<\/strong><\/a>: if you believe you\u2019re a victim of intimate image abuse, keep evidence and report it to the police and the respective platforms;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/privacy.kaspersky.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Check permissions<\/strong><\/a>: regularly review the permission settings on your apps to control data sharing;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaspersky.com\/blog\/kaspersky-international-password-day-2024\/51095\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>Use strong passwords<\/strong><\/a>: employ a reliable security solution to create and manage unique passwords for each account;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/stopncii.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong>Utilize resources<\/strong><\/a>: take advantage of tools like <a href=\"https:\/\/stopncii.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">StopNCII.org<\/a> to help prevent intimate images being shared online without your consent;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/revengepornhelpline.org.uk\/how-can-we-help\/if-we-can-t-help-who-can\/help-for-victims-outside-the-uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong>Find an organization<\/strong><\/a> in your country to provide you with further support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The findings from <a href=\"https:\/\/media.kasperskydaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/86\/2024\/07\/15164921\/The-Naked-Truth-Kaspersky.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our study<\/a> make it clear that, while technology has made intimate image sharing easier, it has also increased the risk of abuse.
